Timeline

  1. c. 1025–1042Ani · Armenian HighlandsGagik II was born into the royal house of Ani and grew up as crown prince at the Bagratid court. His father Hovhannes-Smbat III and uncle Ashot IV ruled jointly, and disputes over succession persisted for years amid complex court politics.
  2. 1042–1045Ani · Armenian HighlandsIn 1042 Gagik II formally became king of Ani, but faced strong military pressure from the Byzantine Empire. In 1045 he was compelled to travel to Constantinople to negotiate with Byzantine Emperor Constantine IX, ultimately ceding the Kingdom of Ani to Byzantium and ending the Bagratids' direct rule over the city of Ani.
  3. 1045–1072Cappadocia · CappadociaAfter ceding the kingdom Gagik II was relocated inland into Byzantium, nominally an honored guest but in reality under house arrest. In 1064 Seljuk Sultan Alp Arslan captured Ani and massacred its Armenian population, utterly ending Armenian rule over their homeland. Around 1072 Gagik II was murdered on Byzantine territory, one account holding that he died at the hands of local Latin nobles in Cappadocia, and the Bagratid Armenian line died out.
