Timeline

  1. c. 1300–1566Konya · KonyaThe Ottomans inherited the caravanserai form of Seljuk Anatolia; under Suleiman the Magnificent, stone caravanserais were systematically built and maintained along imperial highways (such as the Istanbul–Baghdad route), funded and operated by foundations (vakıf), with prescribed daily distances and free lodging days.
  2. 1571–1580Edirne · EdirneFrom 1571 to 1580 the Ottomans maintained the caravanserai system in parallel on the Hungarian front and the Anatolia–Syria trade routes; caravanserais served as relay points for military baggage and silk and spice caravans, and under Selim II the caravanserai regulations (kanunname) of Suleiman's era continued in force.
  3. c. 1600–1900Ankara · AnkaraFrom the seventeenth century, Atlantic–Red Sea routes diverted some eastern trade and the function of some caravanserais weakened; in the nineteenth century railways (such as the planned Baghdad Railway) further replaced caravan traffic, and many caravanserais were converted into warehouses or markets, with some surviving as architectural heritage.
