Timeline
- 1131Winchester · HampshireHenry I summoned nobles and clergy at Winchester, forcing them to swear allegiance to his daughter Matilda and her heirs to establish a lawful successor. Stephen also took part in the oath, but his Boulogne fiefs and close royal kinship made him a potential rival. The oath failed to remove succession uncertainty and instead sharpened factional divisions among the nobility.
- 1135London · EnglandAfter Henry I died near Rouen in Normandy, Stephen crossed from Boulogne to England, won the support of London's citizens and some nobles, quickly seized the royal treasury at Winchester, and was crowned at Westminster Abbey. The backing of his brother Henry, Bishop of Winchester, and the papal legate lent ecclesiastical legitimacy to his usurpation.
- 1135–1136England · EnglandStephen bought off nobles with lavish grants, confirmed church privileges, secured recognition of his kingship from Pope Innocent II, and appointed trusted followers to key military and civil posts. Most English barons chose to support Stephen at first; Matilda, far away in Anjou, could not strike back immediately, allowing Stephen to consolidate control over England's core regions by 1136.
