  1. 1374Auray in Brittany and England · BrittanyJohn IV arrived at Auray in February to convene the Breton Estates, but nobles needed the French king's permission to attend, and Charles V regarded the duchy as a mere sinecure and refused to recognize his ducal title. In April Du Guesclin and Olivier de Clisson led troops into Brittany. At the same time, the papal envoy Pileus went to London proposing a long truce and attendance at the Bruges conference by princes of both realms.
  2. 1374Westminster and the Cotentin · EnglandIn July England approved John IV's expedition to Brittany, running parallel to diplomatic negotiations; from August the French besieged the fortress of Saint-Sauveur in Normandy. In October the Great Council agreed to negotiate at Bruges and appointed Gaunt as chief delegate, but refused a general truce, allowing only a partial ceasefire on the Picardy border for the passage of envoys. Neither side was willing to freeze the military status quo while the situation in Brittany and the Cotentin was unfavorable.
