Timeline
- 1561–1565Cusco highlands · Cusco RegionAfter the Spanish conquest, Andean communities still rotated hundreds of local potato lines by altitude zone, with tubers differing in shape, cold resistance, and storability, forming the everyday subsistence basis of the Inca agricultural legacy under colonial order.
- 1565–1567Lima · Lima RegionChroniclers such as Pedro Cieza de León recorded in detail around this time the tuber traits, mountain cultivation, and ways of eating the potato (papa), bringing Andean landraces into European literature for the first time.
- 1568–1570Port of Callao · Lima RegionOccasionally tubers were shipped from Peruvian coastal ports to Spain, but long-distance transport was perishable and varietal adaptability unknown, so the outflow was extremely small; Andean cultivars remained mainly for local consumption and the tribute system.
