Timeline

  1. c. 1516–1520Quito (base for northern campaigns) · Pichincha ProvinceHuayna Capac long resided in the north, conquering tribes around present-day Ecuador and pushing the empire's territory to its historical peak. The emperor moved the court to Quito, marginalizing the traditional Cuzco nobility, and the balance of central and local power began to tilt.
  2. c. 1516–1527Cuzco · Cuzco RegionThe emperor raised his legitimate son Huáscar in Cuzco while simultaneously cultivating his concubine's son Atahualpa and his maternal clan's power in the north. This arrangement of legitimate and illegitimate heirs ruling north and south violated the traditional single-heir system, planting a structural hazard for the fraternal civil war after Huayna Capac's death.
  3. c. 1516–1520Andean highlands · Andes MountainsAfter the empire's rapid expansion, some newly conquered tribes resented Inca rule, and the mitmae (Mitma) resettlement policy also provoked local backlash. With central military force long concentrated in the north, centrifugal tendencies among vassals south of Cuzco intensified, undercurrents stirring beneath the empire's facade of unity.
