Timeline

  1. 1504–1620Spanish Netherlands (Walloon region) · Walloon regionIn 1504, Queen Joanna of Castile (later mother of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V) approved the recruitment of infantry from the Walloon region of the Netherlands to form a royal guard, the origin of the Walloon Guard. Under Charles V and Philip II the guard continually expanded, its soldiers drawn from the French-speaking Walloon provinces and renowned for loyalty and good training, gradually evolving into a dual-role formation serving both as the palace guard in Madrid and as an elite field infantry regiment in the Netherlands.
  2. 1621–1630Madrid and the Spanish Netherlands battlefield · Low CountriesAfter Philip IV's accession in 1621, the Twelve Years' Truce ended and the Eighty Years' War resumed; the Walloon Guard again became one of the core infantry forces on the Spanish Netherlands battlefield, participating in major operations such as the Siege of Breda. Meanwhile its court garrison duties in Madrid were continually strengthened, and its unique status as a foreign guard made it a trusted political instrument of the Habsburg monarchs. In this phase the Walloon Guard's model of 'exclusive national recruitment plus elite guard treatment' provided a reference blueprint for France, Austria, and other European monarchies in establishing their own foreign guards.
