Timeline
- 1672Dutch Republic · NetherlandsLouis XIV, invoking the recovery of the "natural borders," joined England and German Catholic princes in invading the United Provinces from several directions. French forces quickly seized key positions such as Utrecht, plunging the Dutch into the existential crisis known as the Year of Disaster (Rampjaar); the provincial estates and Orangists urgently mobilized resistance under William III.
- 1672–1673Hollandse Waterlinie · NetherlandsTo slow the French advance, the Dutch deliberately breached dikes to flood the polders, holding their core provinces behind the Hollandse Waterlinie and its fortress system. French supplies and mobility were severely restricted and hopes of a quick victory collapsed; meanwhile Brandenburg and other German princes began turning against France, transforming the war from a single-front invasion into a multi-sided contest.
- 1674–1676Spanish Netherlands and Rhineland frontier · Low CountriesAfter England made peace with France in 1674, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire, and northern European powers further joined the anti-French camp. The two sides fought a war of attrition along the Rhine, in Flanders, and at sea; though the French captured key points such as Maastricht, they could not break the United Provinces, and the war entered a phase of attrition and diplomatic maneuvering.
- 1677–1678Nijmegen · GelderlandThe parties negotiated at Nijmegen and elsewhere, with France trading partial territorial gains for consolidation in the Spanish Netherlands and Franche-Comté. A series of treaties signed from 1678 formally ended the Franco-Dutch War, but security competition among the European powers persisted, laying the groundwork for the later War of the Spanish Succession.
