Timeline

  1. 1336–1467Muromachi, Kyoto · JapanAshikaga Takauji established the Muromachi shogunate, setting up the shogunal palace and the hyōjōshū, and governing the provinces through shugo daimyō. The shogunate regulated commerce through institutions such as hangyō-ki and dōkura, sharing political power with the court, forming a ruling order blending warrior government and courtly culture.
  2. 1501–1510Kyoto · JapanBetween 1501 and 1510, Ashikaga Yoshizumi and Ashikaga Yoshitane successively served as shogun, but real power in the shogunate fell to powerful shugo daimyō such as the Hosokawa and Yamana. As provincial shugo and kokujin forces expanded, the shogunate could no longer govern the country, politics at the Kyoto palace became hollow, and the fragmentation of Sengoku daimyō gradually took shape.
