In his youth he traveled in Italy, served as a mercenary, and then turned to commerce and legal practice, encountering Renaissance ideas and administrative skills during his time in Italy. After returning to England he established himself in London as a lawyer and cloth merchant.
  2. 1520–1529London · LondonCromwell entered the service of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, becoming his important legal adviser and administrative assistant, helping manage church property and handle complex legal affairs. During this period he entered Parliament and built a wide network of political connections. In 1529 Wolsey fell from power after failing to secure an annulment for Henry VIII, and Cromwell preserved himself through his own abilities amid the political crisis.
  3. 1530–1536Westminster · LondonCromwell quickly rose into Henry VIII's inner circle, becoming chief minister and leading a series of laws—including the Act in Restraint of Appeals (1533) and the Act of Supremacy (1534)—that defined the English Church's independence from Rome. He also promoted the modernization of government administration, making the Privy Council an efficient central administrative body. In 1535 he engineered the execution of Thomas More for refusing the oath, and continued to expand royal power.
  4. 1536–1540Across England · EnglandAs Vicegerent in Spirituals, Cromwell organized a comprehensive survey and dissolved hundreds of monasteries across England, transferring vast lands and wealth to the royal treasury. This fundamentally altered the pattern of landholding in England and strengthened Henry VIII's financial base and secular power. In 1540 he was created Earl of Essex, reaching the height of his influence.
  5. 1540Tower of London · LondonThe marriage Cromwell arranged for Henry VIII with Anne of Cleves deeply displeased the king; combined with political attacks from hostile court factions, Cromwell was arrested and imprisoned in April 1540, and executed by an act of attainder for treason and heresy without a formal trial, beheaded at Tower Hill, London, on July 28, 1540.
