Timeline
- c. -885Sparta · LacedaemonHerodotus already records two sources: the laws came either from the Pythia at Delphi or, as Spartans claimed, imitated from Crete. He is said to have been regent for a young king (Leobotes of the Agiads or Charilaus of the Eurypontids, both houses vying to claim him). Tyrtaeus's poems contain no Lycurgus, so many modern historians date the legend's formation to the late 7th–6th centuries BCE. Plutarch's Life of Lycurgus is the fullest literary biography, opening by admitting the date cannot be determined.
