Timeline
- 1382Nagyszombat · SlovakiaLouis I, joint ruler of Hungary and Poland, died at Nagyszombat while campaigning in the Balkans. His will left Hungary to his eldest daughter Mary and Poland to his second daughter Jadwiga, and provided that if one line died out the other would inherit, planting the seeds of the later succession crisis.
- 1382–1383Buda · HungaryMary, about 12 years old, was crowned Queen of Hungary at Székesfehérvár, with her mother Elizabeth of Bosnia serving as regent. Nobles grew increasingly dissatisfied with the child ruler, the foreign regent, and the will's breach of primogeniture custom, and central authority began to weaken.
- 1383–1384Kraków and various regions in Hungary · Lesser PolandBecause Louis's second daughter Jadwiga was too young, Polish nobles instead crowned her cousin of the same name as Queen of Poland, effectively weakening the Polish–Hungarian personal union. Some great nobles in Hungary refused to obey the regency and began seeking external claimants to the throne.
- 1385–1386Buda · HungaryCharles of Naples (of Durazzo), of the Angevin branch, was invited by Hungarian opposition forces to invade; late in 1385 he occupied Buda and was crowned King of Hungary, imprisoning Mary and Elizabeth. In February 1386 Charles was assassinated in Buda, and the crisis entered a new round of power vacuum.
- 1387–1390Kingdom of Hungary · HungarySigismund of Luxembourg, Mary's husband, gradually took real power after Charles's death and was formally crowned King of Hungary in 1387. By around 1390, by suppressing noble factions and managing relations with Poland and the Balkans, he eased the political turmoil caused by the succession crisis, and Hungary entered the rule of the Luxembourg dynasty.
