Timeline
- 1671–1678Muscat · OmanSultan bin Saif completed the expulsion of the Portuguese from the mainland, expanded the fleet, and attacked Portuguese targets on the Gujarat coast. The Ya'rubid ruler list records his reign as 1649–1688; the main text elsewhere mentions abdication in 1679, a discrepancy resolved in favor of the ruler list. The expansion of the 1670s rested on the existing navy, not on a 'reorganization of mainland power' completed that decade.
- 1660–1679Mombasa · KenyaIn 1660 Omani forces attacked Mombasa, forcing the Portuguese into Fort Jesus; Portuguese and Omani forces continued fighting along the East African coast for several years. The 1670s formed part of this sustained pressure, but the decade has no verifiable 'capture of Zanzibar' node.
- 1679–1680Zanzibar · TanzaniaOman besieged Mombasa again in 1696; the siege of Fort Jesus lasted about 33 months, and after the surviving garrison surrendered Oman became the dominant coastal power. Large-scale Omani migration into Zanzibar began only after this campaign. Saif bin Sultan reigned c. 1692–1711, not in the 1670s.
