Timeline

  1. 1319–1331Oslo · NorwayMagnus Eriksson succeeded his grandfather Haakon V as King of Norway at age three; the regency was held by his mother Ingeborg and Norway's great nobles, leaving royal power nominally unified but actual authority dispersed among local magnates and the church.
  2. 1332–1333Bergen · NorwayAfter Magnus came of age the regency system collapsed; Norway's council of state and bishops demanded confirmation of ancient privilege charters, limiting the king's interference in church property and local justice. The succession order was undisputed, but the foundation of royal power was weakened.
  3. 1334–1335Hebrides · ScotlandConflicts with Scotland over suzerainty of the Hebrides and trade routes drained national strength, and Magnus's lack of a secure heir (his son Haakon was still a minor) deepened Norwegian noble doubts about the dual monarchy bound to Sweden.
