Timeline

  1. 1550–1554Cartagena de Indias · Caribbean coastIn the early 1550s, Cartagena's deep-water harbor and relatively safe anchorage attracted merchant ships from the Seville fleets, Caribbean islands, and New Spain. The port gradually accumulated transshipment trade and customs revenue, creating conditions for an institutionalized fair.
  2. 1554–1558Cartagena · ColombiaLocal governors and merchant guilds began holding concentrated trading fairs in Cartagena at fixed seasons, where European cloth, ironware, and wine were exchanged for American products such as Peruvian silver, mercury, and cocoa. Customs officials were on site to inspect cargo manifests and collect duties such as the alcabala.
  3. 1555–1559Caribbean Sea · South AmericaIn the later 1550s, the timing of the Cartagena fair was gradually coordinated with the sailing schedule of the treasure fleets departing Seville, making the port a waystation for fleets heading south on the Cartagena–Potosí route or north to Havana. Silver, mercury, and European manufactures were distributed here, strengthening the Caribbean node function of Spain's colonial trade network.
