Timeline

  1. 1051–1054Gaeseong (Gaeseong-gyeong) · GoryeoMunjong continued the policy of weakening local powerful clans begun under Hyeonjong and Gyeongjong, further consolidating central government control over local lords through personnel appointments and adjustments to the land tax (Jeonchaekkeo). The governance foundation of what history calls the 'Taiping Shengdai' was steadily reinforced during this decade.
  2. 1055Gaeseong (Gaeseong-gyeong) · GoryeoIn 1055 Munjong's fourth son Wang U was born; he later became a monk at Heungwangsa Temple in 1067 with the Buddhist name Uicheon, becoming an important patriarch of Goryeo's Tiantai school. During Munjong's reign he focused on cultivating his sons, and the traditions of heir succession and Buddhist state preceptor continued from this.
  3. 1056Northeastern Jurchen frontier · GoryeoIn 1056 Goryeo forces repelled incursions by the Eastern Jurchens and destroyed more than twenty of their settlement strongholds, temporarily stabilizing the northeastern border. This campaign echoed Munjong's policies of multiple northern campaigns against the Jurchens and construction of border fortresses, laying the groundwork for later advancing the frontier to the Yalu and Tumen rivers.
