Timeline

  1. 1650–1653Naples · ItalyAfter Spanish forces fully suppressed the Neapolitan revolt in 1648, the new viceroy Íñigo Vélez de Guevara vigorously restored Spanish royal authority in the early 1650s, arresting and punishing remnants of the revolt and reconsolidating the rule of nobles and the Church. Rights briefly won by commoners during the revolt were systematically stripped away, and the excise tax (gabella) on basic foods such as fruit and bread was partially reimposed, leaving popular grievances unresolved.
  2. 1653–1657Kingdom of Naples · Southern ItalyIn the mid-1650s, poor harvests and unstable food supplies repeatedly afflicted the Kingdom of Naples, and urban poor remained in hardship. The Spanish crown continued extracting large fiscal resources from Naples to fund its wars in Europe, leaving extremely limited local fiscal autonomy. Traditional handicrafts such as silk weaving and leather were doubly squeezed by wartime disruption and predatory noble taxation, urban economic recovery was slow, and poverty and social discontent spread among lower-class citizens.
  3. 1657–1659Port of Naples · ItalyBy the late 1650s, as political conditions across the Mediterranean stabilized (especially with the 1659 Treaty of the Pyrenees ending the Franco-Spanish War), Naples' port saw a modest rebound in grain and silk exports. But this recovery was extremely fragile: under the Spanish colonial system Naples lacked autonomous commercial policy and could not effectively participate in the reorganization of broader Mediterranean trade networks as Genoa or Venice could, its port function throughout the second half of the 17th century serving more as an auxiliary transshipment point for the Spanish Empire.
