Timeline

  1. 1396–1397Stockholm · SwedenAfter Margaret I unified Sweden, Erik was elected king in Sweden in July 1396 and completed the three-kingdom coronation at Kalmar on 17 June the following year; real power in Sweden still rested with Margaret, while Erik gradually familiarized himself with Swedish affairs and noble networks.
  2. 1412–1426Øresund region · ScaniaAfter Margaret's death Erik held sole Swedish royal power, pursuing centralization and wars against the Hanseatic League and Holstein. Swedish iron mines and districts were levied to fund the wars, provoking noble and burgher discontent with the 'foreign king', and Swedish interests were often subordinated to Denmark and Baltic warfare in union diplomacy.
  3. 1434–1439Bergslagen · SwedenIn 1434 miners and peasants of Bergslagen rose in rebellion, led by the noble Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson, driving out Danish-appointed officials across Sweden. Though briefly restored in 1435, the Swedish council formally deposed Erik in September 1439, severely damaging the Kalmar Union's cohesion in Sweden.
