Timeline

  1. c. 1400–1550Kinderdijk · NetherlandsIn the 14th and 15th centuries, simple drainage systems combining windmills and sluices appeared along the Dutch coast and river valleys, raising water levels in flooded areas before discharging them into higher rivers, accumulating experience for later systematic polder development.
  2. c. 1571–1580Leiden · NetherlandsAfter the Siege of Leiden was lifted in 1574, the Dutch Republic accelerated drainage works in western polders; during the 1570s large numbers of wip-type drainage windmills and ring channels were built, converting war-damaged marshland into grain fields and supporting the Republic's finances and population growth.
  3. c. 1600–1650Beemster · NetherlandsAt the start of the 17th century, large polder plans such as the Beemster employed multiple windmills working in concert with unified water-level management, creating a replicable polder model that provided a template for Dutch Golden Age territorial expansion and urban planning.
