Timeline

  1. 1551Gozo · GozoOn 16 July 1551, Sinan Pasha and Dragut arrived off Malta with about 145 ships and 10,000–12,000 men. After probing Birgu and Fort St. Angelo and judging the main island too well defended, they turned on Gozo. Following bombardment on 24–26 July, governor Galatian de Ces surrendered; the Ottomans broke their promises, sacked the castle, and carried some 5,000–6,000 Gozitan inhabitants off to Tripoli as slaves, nearly emptying the island.
  2. 1551–1552Marfa Ridge, Malta · MaltaAfter the 1551 raid the Order recognized the Grand Harbour's inadequate defenses. The Viceroy of Sicily, Juan de Vega, sent the military engineer Pietro Prado to Malta to assess matters together with the Order's council. In January 1552 it was decided to urgently build two new forts at strategic points in the Grand Harbour: Fort St. Elmo at the tip of the Sciberras Peninsula and Fort St. Michael on the landward side of the O peninsula, while also reinforcing Fort St. Angelo.
  3. 1552–1560Grand Harbour, Malta · MaltaFrom 1552 the Order mobilized the island's resources, completing Fort St. Elmo, Fort St. Michael (later developed into Senglea), and the expansion of Fort St. Angelo within six months. Though the expected Ottoman attack of 1552 never came, the new forts played a key role in the Great Siege of 1565 — Dragut himself died in the assault on Fort St. Elmo. Although Gozo's castle was repaired in the 1560s, the Order prioritized the Grand Harbour and the navy, marking the final establishment of Malta's strategic status as the Order's permanent base.
