Boyle Air Pump Technical Lineage
Boyle's air pump, developed by Robert Boyle and Robert Hooke in 1659, was one of the most important experimental instruments of the European Scientif…
Timeline
- 1671–1674London · BritainBoyle published multiple editions of his gas experiment works from the 1660s to the early 1670s, continuously revising and expanding the air pump experimental system. Improved piston sealing techniques and a double-cylinder design increased pumping efficiency, bringing the vacuum closer to an ideal state and providing a more reliable experimental platform for precisely measuring the relationship between gas pressure and volume (Boyle's law).
- 1675–1680Western Europe (Britain, France, Netherlands) · Western EuropeIn the mid-to-late 1670s, copies or improved versions of Boyle's air pump successively appeared in the Paris Royal Academy of Sciences (introduced by Huygens), at Leiden University in the Netherlands, and in the natural philosophy laboratories of German princes. Air pump demonstrations became a hallmark of scientific salons and university courses, promoting systematic research on vacuum physics and gas chemistry across Europe.
