  1. c. 1106–1190Rome · LazioGiacinto Bobone served long in the Roman church hierarchy, was raised to cardinal in 1147, participated in papal elections and curial administration, and accumulated diplomatic and canon law experience, laying the foundation for his later election as pope.
  2. 1191–1198Rome · LazioAfter his election in 1191 he supported the Third Crusade, crowned Henry VI Holy Roman Emperor in Rome in 1192, and intervened in the conflict between Richard I and Philip II in the Levant. The curia also advanced in heresy trials and church discipline.
