  1. 1204–1220Candia · CandiaAfter the Fourth Crusade, Venice obtained sovereignty over the whole island of Crete from the crusader leaders. Between 1205 and 1217 Venice gradually suppressed Greek resistance on the island and established a colonial capital at Candia (modern Heraklion), though local magnates and mountain communities still caused occasional unrest.
  2. 1228Candia · CandiaIn 1228 Venice strengthened the permanent governance of the duke (duca di Candia) and local council (Consiglio) at Candia, clarifying military garrison, tariff collection, and judicial jurisdiction. Venetian mainland nobles were granted fiefs (feudum) on the island, while Greek peasants were bound to estates through labor rents (metochia).

Exports of olive oil, wine, and grain rose, and Venetian merchant shipping regulations (muda) incorporated Candia into regular routes, entering a relatively stable period of colonial rule.
