Timeline

  1. 1091Córdoba · AndalusiaAlmoravid forces entered al-Andalus at the request of Ibn Abbas, ending the local separatist rule of the Taifa of Córdoba. The city was incorporated into the trans-strait empire centered on Marrakesh, becoming a secondary metropolis under Berber military aristocratic rule.
  2. 1111–1120Around the Great Mosque of Córdoba · CórdobaDuring this period Córdoba still revolved around the Great Mosque of the Umayyad era as the core of the city's religious and spatial order, with surrounding quarters maintaining Islamic market and handicraft layouts. The population had clearly contracted from its 10th-century peak, but it remained an important inland Andalusian distribution center for grain, leather, and scholarship, and served to channel talent to larger metropolises such as Seville.
  3. 1118–1126Córdoba · AndalusiaAs the northern kingdoms of León–Castile and Aragon pushed south, Córdoba lay behind the front line of the Reconquista. Almoravid garrisons and local Andalusian militias jointly maintained the city's defenses; the urban economy increasingly served military provisioning and the transfer of trans-strait revenues, while cultural prosperity continued to shift toward Seville, Granada, and other cities.
