Timeline

  1. 1043–1047Northern frontier of the Taifa of Toledo · CastileAccording to the Muslim chronicler Ibn Idhari, Ferdinand I attacked the frontier zone of the Taifa of Toledo in the mid-1040s, causing panic and flight among local residents. This marked León–Castile's shift from a focus on internal affairs after 1037 to tentative military pressure on al-Andalus.
  2. 1045–1049Duero River valley · CastileIn the later 1040s Ferdinand continued to consolidate Christian control along the Duero River, granting charters (fueros) to encourage resettlement and building or repairing frontier castles. Frontier communities formed new economic–military networks between raiding and defense, providing bases for the large-scale southern campaigns after 1055.
  3. 1048–1050Southern frontier of the Iberian Peninsula · Iberian PeninsulaBy the late 1040s Ferdinand began systematically applying the idea of extracting tribute through war: using raids and diplomatic threats to compel weaker taifas to pay parias rather than conquering them outright. This strategy profoundly affected Zaragoza, Toledo, and the taifas of Andalusia after the 1050s, becoming one of the core mechanisms of the Reconquista.
