Siamese–Burmese War

Type Event Region Southeast Asia Time 1551–1560

In the 1550s, Burma's Toungoo dynasty under Bayinnaung consolidated control over Pegu and Lower Burma while continuing to press Ayutthaya and Lanna.

Timeline

  1. 1550–1552Pegu · PeguAfter Tabinshwehti's assassination in 1550, Bayinnaung acceded at Pegu and immediately suppressed various separatist forces, reunifying the Toungoo–Pegu polity and laying military and administrative foundations for subsequent external expansion.
  2. 1553–1557Lower Burma and the Tenasserim corridor · Lower BurmaBayinnaung consolidated control over key places such as Pegu and Mawlamyine, clashing repeatedly with Ayutthaya over influence in Tenasserim and vassal states of the northern Malay Peninsula. Both sides sought to control trade routes and tributary networks, and small-scale border conflicts occurred frequently.
  3. 1558–1560Chiang Mai · LannaIn 1558 Bayinnaung led an army to conquer Lanna (Chiang Mai), forming a strategic encirclement of Ayutthaya from the north. Ayutthaya temporarily retained independence but lost its traditional influence over Lanna; full-scale Siamese–Burmese confrontation escalated further in the early 1560s.
