Timeline

  1. 1501–1580Tabriz · AzerbaijanThe Qizilbash originated from Azerbaijani and Anatolian Turkic tribes, famed for cavalry charges and religious fervor; after the founding, tribal chiefs served as governors (beglarbegi) and held key court posts, forming the Safavid military-political core of tribe-fief-army, still the state's main armed force in the 1580s.
  2. 1581–1587Qazvin · IranAfter Tahmasp I died in 1576, court coups were frequent under Ismail II and Muhammad Khodabanda; Qizilbash tribes such as the Shamlu and Rumlu fought each other for regency and military power, weakening central authority, and Safavid defenses against Khorasan and the Uzbek frontier in the 1580s were hamstrung by tribal private forces.
  3. 1587–1590Qazvin · IranIn 1587 the fifteen-year-old Abbas I acceded with Qizilbash support, initially still relying on tribal military nobles; around 1590 he began cultivating non-tribal royal slave soldiers (ghulam) and firearm troops, and though the Qizilbash remained the main battlefield force, their monopoly on arms and administration faced a fundamental challenge.
  4. 1583–1590Mesopotamian frontier · West AsiaIn the 1580s the Safavid and Ottoman empires repeatedly contended along the Mesopotamian and Azerbaijani frontiers, with Qizilbash cavalry still the core of Safavid field armies; Ottoman capture of Tabriz in 1584 exposed the tribal coalition's poor coordination, prompting Abbas I to later seek more centralized military reform.
