Timeline

  1. -600–-500Clusium · ChiusiPorsena (Etruscan Pursenas) was the lar of Clusium. Roman historians called Clusium a powerful Etruscan state at the time. No independent chronology of his reign exists; it can only be inferred from the traditional dating of the war on Rome.
  2. -508–-507Rome · RomeAfter Tarquin's exile he sought Porsena's aid. Livy's mainstream account says that after besieging Rome he made peace following Mucius Scaevola's failed attempt on the king and Cloelia's escape with hostages, and Tarquin was not restored. Other accounts imply he at one point subdued Rome, perhaps to control it himself rather than restore the old king. His son Aruns separately attacked Aricia and was defeated by the Latin League and Cumae. These episodes belong to the legends of the Republic's origins and their details cannot be treated as reliable history.
