Timeline
- 1451–1456Wallachia · WallachiaSince Mircea I, Wallachia had paid annual tribute to the Ottomans and acknowledged the sultan's suzerainty. In the early 1450s the reigning voivode Vladislav II maintained a pro-Ottoman policy, paying tribute regularly and cooperating with Ottoman military operations. However, disputes over tribute amounts, the size of contingents, and the choice of voivode had become flashpoints between the two sides.
- 1456–1459Târgoviște · WallachiaAfter acceding, Vlad III sharply reduced tribute, refused to send troops on Ottoman campaigns, and launched night raids on Ottoman border garrisons. Sultan Mehmed II regarded him as a rebellious vassal, and diplomatic channels between the two nearly broke off. Wallachia wavered uneasily between Hungarian support and Ottoman suzerainty, its vassalage existing in name only.
- 1459–1460Wallachia · WallachiaThe Ottomans sought to regain control of Wallachia by backing pro-Ottoman voivodes, military intimidation, and diplomatic pressure, while Hungary used Wallachia as an anti-Ottoman buffer state. The tensions of the late 1450s foreshadowed the larger conflict of Mehmed II's personal campaign against Wallachia in 1462, fully exposing the fragility of the vassal system.
