Timeline

  1. 1649Podolia · UkraineIn spring and summer 1649, Khmelnytsky launched a new offensive; Cossack and Tatar allied forces invaded Poland's eastern borderlands. The Polish nobility's forces retreated in several places, and some remnants withdrew to the fortified castle of Zbarazh, which became the frontline stronghold of Commonwealth resistance.
  2. 1649Zbarazh Castle · UkraineThe Cossack army surrounded Zbarazh Castle; the garrison, commanded by Jerzy Wiśniowiecki and other nobles, numbered about a thousand men defending the stone fortress. The siege lasted several weeks; repeated Cossack assaults failed, and the garrison, out of food and relief, resisted stubbornly, with heavy casualties on both sides.
  3. 1649Zborov · UkraineJohn II Casimir personally led the main Commonwealth relief force as it approached; the Cossacks, with their Tatar allies withdrawing and facing supply difficulties, could not hold out either. With neither side able to break the deadlock, armistice negotiations were mediated by the church, and a peace treaty was signed at Zborov, ending the siege through political compromise rather than outright military victory.
