Pike-and-musket squares coordinated with field artillery became common deployments, and mercenary captains remained central in sieges and pitched battles.
- 1521–1530Lombardy and Tuscany · ItalyDuring the 1521 siege in the Milan direction, the upheaval after the 1527 Sack of Rome, and the 1529–1530 Siege of Florence, all factions still relied heavily on condotta troops for garrison defense, field battle, and restoring order after raids; mercenary contract prices and loyalty issues became ever more prominent.
