Timeline

  1. 1471Brunkeberg · SwedenDanish King Christian I led forces to besiege Stockholm; Regent Sten Sture led Swedish peasant levies and townspeople to meet them at Brunkeberg and won. This battle shattered Denmark's attempt at direct conquest of Sweden, greatly boosting the Sture faction's prestige, making it the de facto ruler of Sweden in the 1470s and leaving the Kalmar Union nominal only.
  2. 1472–1476Uppsala · SwedenAfter the war, the Sture faction repeatedly clashed with nobles such as Archbishop Jöns Bengtsson Oxenstierna of Uppsala who advocated maintaining the Kalmar Union. In the mid-1470s the two sides reconciled and fell out several times; the regent faction relied on the assembly and peasant support to suppress the Unionists, limiting the archbishop's political influence and consolidating the secular regency system.
  3. 1477–1480Stockholm · SwedenBy the late 1470s, Sten Sture consolidated regency power through tax reform and more frequent assemblies, while maintaining commercial cooperation with Hanseatic cities to counter Denmark's economic blockade. Though the Danish king still held nominal claim to the Swedish throne, he could not effectively rule the inland provinces, and Sweden's de facto independence gradually took shape between 1471 and 1480.
