Timeline
- 1321–1325Novgorod · RussiaIn the early 1320s, Novgorod was governed jointly by the elected posadnik and the veche assembly, nominally recognizing the Vladimir–Moscow grand prince as suzerain. The city safeguarded merchant privileges through the Novgorod Law and maintained active trade with Hanseatic League cities, controlling the Baltic–Volga route for furs and beeswax.
- 1325Moscow · RussiaIn 1325, at the invitation of Grand Prince Ivan Kalita of Moscow, Metropolitan Peter of Russia moved the see from Vladimir to Moscow and crowned the grand prince there. This elevated Moscow's status as the religious and political center of northeastern Rus', posing a long-term challenge to Novgorod, though the republic retained practical autonomy in the 1320s.
- 1327–1330Tver · RussiaFrom 1327 to 1330, Grand Prince Alexander Mikhailovich of Tver and Grand Prince Ivan Kalita of Moscow contested the title 'Grand Prince of Vladimir' and Golden Horde investiture. Novgorod maintained diplomatic balance between them to protect its trade routes, but after the Tver uprising of 1327 Moscow's power rose further and the republic's room for autonomy gradually narrowed.
