Timeline

In 1018 he made peace with the Hammadid dynasty and recognized its independence.
- 1041–1045Kairouan · KairouanIn the 1040s Ifriqiya suffered currency depreciation, plague, and famine, and the annual tribute of one million gold dinars to the Fatimids added to the fiscal burden. Driven by the Sunni jurists of Kairouan and popular anti-Shia sentiment, in 1045 he formally recognized the Abbasid caliph in Baghdad as orthodox, struck coins denouncing the Fatimids as heretics, and broke completely with Cairo.
- 1051–1062Mahdia · MahdiaThe Fatimids sent the Bedouin tribes of Banu Hilal and Banu Sulaym to invade from Egypt; after defeat at Mount Haydaran in 1051–1052 agriculture was severely damaged; in 1053–1054 Kairouan fell, and after 1057 the Zirids lost the interior, moving the capital to Mahdia and preserving only a coastal trade and piracy economy, until his death in 1062, when his son al-Tamim succeeded him.
