Timeline

  1. 1371–1375Buda–Kraków · Central EuropeFrom 1370 Louis I concurrently reigned as King of Poland, alternating between Buda and Kraków to handle affairs of state. The Hungarian noble Diet and the Polish noble assembly each operated separately, and the king bound the loyalty of both realms' nobles through charters and marriages. The personal union expanded the Angevin resource base but increased the monarch's travel burden and military costs.
  2. 1372–1378Dalmatian coast · CroatiaIn the 1370s Louis I continued claims to the Neapolitan throne and contested control of Dalmatian ports with Venice. Fighting fluctuated between 1372 and 1378; although Hungary at times occupied coastal towns, naval disadvantages made total victory unattainable. The southern wars tied down the kingdom's forces but failed to eliminate Venice's commercial dominance in the Adriatic.
  3. 1375–1380Transylvania–Wallachia border · RomaniaLouis I held Wallachia, Moldavia, and other southeastern vassals under Hungarian suzerainty and deployed defenses in Transylvania against Ottoman northward expansion. The 1377 change of Wallachian voivode still required his approval. In the late 1370s the Kingdom of Hungary still held a leading position in the Balkans, but Ottoman pressure kept raising frontier defense costs.
