Timeline

  1. 1374–1376Mali imperial court (near Niani) · MaliAfter Mansa Mari Djata II died of illness in 1374, his son Musa II succeeded. He openly rejected his father's tyranny and extravagance, attempting to restore imperial finances and order, but court affairs quickly fell under the control of kankoro-sigui Mari Djata, and the mansa's own power was far below that of the early Keita kings.
  2. 1376–1380Gao · MaliDuring Musa II's reign, the powerful minister Mari Djata effectively directed military and civil affairs. Provinces in the empire's east centered on Gao grew increasingly centrifugal, and conflict with Berber forces over Gao caused severe damage to the city. Mari Djata's army besieged Takedda (or Tadmekka) and forced a peace, but control of the east was hard to restore.
  3. 1380–1387Mali Empire · MaliIn the 1380s Musa II continued to nominally rule Mali's core territories, but the empire's territory had shrunk considerably from the time of Mansa Musa I. He died around 1387 and was succeeded by his brother Maghan II, as Mali entered a period of further decline with powerful ministers manipulating the throne.
