Timeline

  1. c. 1340–1370Constantinople · Byzantine EmpireBorn in Constantinople around 1340. Epiphanius states that he painted several stone churches in the capital, Chalcedon, Galata, and Caffa in Crimea, forming the swift, nearly monochrome expressive style of the late Palaiologan period, which he later brought to Rus'.
  2. c. 1370–1378Veliky Novgorod · NovgorodArrived in the Novgorod Republic around 1370. Chronicles and letters list him as an already famous foreign master, beginning to take on local church frescoes and introducing contemporary Constantinopolitan style to northwestern Rus'.
  3. 1378Church of the Transfiguration on Ilyin Street · NovgorodPainted the frescoes of the Church of the Transfiguration on Ilyin Street in 1378; the dome's Christ Pantocrator and the surviving ancestors' fragments are today the only securely attested works of his hand, and are exemplary of 14th-century Rus' fresco painting. Epiphanius emphasized that he painted from memory and philosophical contemplation rather than rigidly copying models.
  4. c. 1390–1410Moscow Kremlin · MoscowMoved to Moscow in the 1390s: chronicles record the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos in 1395, the Cathedral of the Archangel in 1399, and in 1405 he collaborated with Andrei Rublev and Prokhor of Gorodets on the iconostasis of the Annunciation Cathedral. Records then break off, and he died around 1410.
