Timeline
- c. 1464–1480Mongolian Plateau · Mongolian PlateauBatumöngke lost his father young and at one point fell ill. After Manduul Khan's death, his widow Mandukhai Khatun adopted this young descendant of Kublai and raised him to the khaganate as Dayan Khan, to continue the Borjigin great khagan line, while she herself held real military and political power.
- c. 1480–1510Ordos · OrdosAs an adult, Dayan Khan together with Mandukhai campaigned against the Oirats, weakening the taishi's monopoly on power, and allied with tribes such as descendants of Hasar. From the 1480s, because the Ming closed the frontier and killed envoys, he intensified pressure along the border, at one point occupying Ordos and later moving north to the Kerulen River. During this period the eastern Mongols once again recognized the khagan authority of Genghis Khan's descendants.
- 1510–1517Chahar tribal pasturelands · ChaharAfter Mandukhai's death around 1510, Dayan Khan continued suppressing rebellions of the Right Wing, abolished the old titles of taishi and chancellor, and enfeoffed his sons with the six tumens of the Left and Right Wings, himself remaining based in Chahar. This arrangement allowed Borjigin rule over the various tribes to continue for several generations; later Mongol leaders such as Altan Khan all descended from his line.
