Timeline
- 1225–1227Damascus · SyriaAl-Mu'azzam Isa had ruled Damascus since 1218, forming a constellation of Ayyubid states alongside his brothers al-Kamil in Egypt and al-Ashraf in Mesopotamia. In his later years he worked to strengthen the southern Syrian frontier and coordinate defense against Crusader remnants, but disagreements over territorial succession within the family were increasingly apparent.
- 1227Damascus · SyriaAl-Mu'azzam died of illness in Damascus; his son al-Nasir Dawud was young, and Syrian military and political elites disagreed over the succession. Damascus fell into a brief interregnum without a dominant sultan, as garrisons and emirs sought new overlords and guarantees, opening the way to an uncle-nephew struggle within the family.
- 1227–1228Syria · SyriaEgyptian Sultan al-Kamil, as uncle, claimed guardianship over Damascus, at one point placing al-Nasir Dawud under house arrest and attempting to control Syria directly; al-Nasir Dawud's supporters held certain castles in resistance. The conflict of late 1227 marked the Ayyubid family's shift from Saladin-style unity to long-term fragmentation among states, until al-Nasir Dawud recovered Damascus in 1229.
