Timeline
- 1555–1557Taizhou · Zhejiang ProvinceEnglish Wikipedia: In 1553 Qi Jiguang was promoted to vice commissioner-in-chief for coastal defense in Shandong; in autumn 1555 he was transferred to Zhejiang, where coastal wokou raids had already spiraled out of control. By 1557 he was in the eastern Zhejiang order of battle, but this entry does not put the unverified date of his appointment as 'Taizhou-Jinhu-Yan' regional inspector into the main text.
- 1559Yiwu · Zhejiang ProvinceAfter the Battle of Cengang, Qi Jiguang shifted his focus to training troops, mainly recruiting miners and peasants from Yiwu and supervising the construction of various warships. English Wikipedia records the new army's first test of arms at Taizhou in 1559, lasting about a month, with wokou casualties exceeding five thousand. The name 'mandarin-duck formation' is not pinned to 1557.
- 1558Cengang (Zhoushan) · ZhoushanIn 1558 Qi Jiguang, together with Yu Dayou and Tan Lun, won a decisive victory at Cengang (Zhoushan); after the battle he was nearly demoted on false charges of colluding with the wokou. The so-called 'nine victories at Taizhou' does not appear on the English Wikipedia page cited by this entry and is not written into the main text.
