Timeline
- 1643Florence · TuscanyAfter Galileo's death Torricelli succeeded to his chair of mathematics and continued research on vacuums and fluid pressure. He filled a sealed-end glass tube with mercury, inverted it into a mercury basin, forming the Torricelli vacuum at the top; the mercury column stood about 76 cm and varied with atmospheric pressure, thus inventing the barometer and proving the weight of the atmosphere.
