Timeline
- 1301–1305Hangzhou · ZhejiangBetween 1301 and 1305 Huang Gongwang sought an official career around Hangzhou, frequenting the residences of powerful figures and socializing with noted scholars. During this period he personally saw Zhao Mengfu painting at the Songxue Studio and received guidance on painting and calligraphy theory, leaving the line 'In those years I saw Old Songxue myself, a student boy in Songxue Studio' — a key period of gestation as he shifted from clerk to literati painter.
- 1306–1310Western Zhejiang (Hangzhou–Songjiang area) · JiangnanBetween 1306 and 1310 Huang Gongwang wandered and socialized in western Zhejiang, associating with Daoist priests and literati while also practicing divination and painting. During this period he gradually shook off the shadow of his earlier clerical post, fusing Zhao Mengfu's archaist calligraphic style with his own observations of Jiangnan landscapes, laying the direction for the brushwork language and reclusive spirit of his late masterpieces such as Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains.
