Timeline

  1. 1543Basel · SwitzerlandVesalius published the seven-volume De humani corporis fabrica in Basel, printed by Johannes Oporinus, with woodcuts produced by engravers associated with Titian's workshop. Correcting numerous Galenic errors through his own dissections and advocating direct observation of bodily structure, it became a foundational work of modern anatomy.
  2. 1551–1559Padua · VenetoAfter Vesalius left Padua, the illustrations and anatomical methods of De humani corporis fabrica were widely adopted in European medical schools. Public dissections and textbook citations increased in the 1550s, promoting a training model that replaced purely textual commentary with direct observation, and providing a paradigm for later anatomical treatises and surgical manuals.
