Timeline

  1. 1118–1131Hamadan · IranAfter their father Muhammad Tapar died in 1118, western Iran and Iraq fell to his elder brother Mahmud II. Around 1120–1121, Mas'ud, aged twelve, rebelled against his brother but failed and was pardoned. His power base was Iraq, not Khurasan or Ghazni.
  2. 1131–1134Baghdad · IraqAfter Mahmud's death in 1131, Mas'ud contended with Dawud, Seljuk Shah, and Tughril II. In 1133 he was recognized by the emir of Baghdad and invested by Caliph al-Mustarshid; in May 1133 he defeated Tughril, who died the following year. His uncle Sanjar still held Khurasan and did not hand over Merv to Mas'ud.
  3. 1134–1152Hamadan · IranDuring his reign he clashed with Caliphs al-Mustarshid and al-Rashid, and relied on iqta grants to maintain his emirs. He actually controlled Iraq and western Iran, while eastern Khurasan still belonged to Sanjar. He died at Hamadan on October 10, 1152, and was succeeded by Malik Shah III.
