Decline of the Gurjara-Pratihara Dynasty (1020s)
The Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty, once ruling most of North India with its capital at Kanauj, was by the 1020s a dynasty in name only.
Timeline
- 1020–1023Kanauj (Kannauj) · North IndiaAfter Mahmud of Ghazni's 1018 expedition sacked Kanauj, Pratihara central authority collapsed; late rulers such as Rajapala held only nominal rule and could not prevent vassal defections and the rise of local strongmen.
- 1024–1029Ganges Plain · North IndiaThe Gahadavalas rose at Kanauj while the Chandellas and Kalachuris expanded their power, and Pratihara remnants shrank further; the concept of a North Indian 'empire' gave way to a network of regional dynasties, creating conditions for the later northward advance of Turkic-Muslim powers.
