Timeline
- 1371–1373Ferghana · FerghanaIn the early 1370s Timur rose to power in Transoxiana, reorganizing the armed forces of various Turkic-Mongol tribes into corps capable of coordinated action. Early organization was based on cavalry thousands and hundreds under tribal leaders and trusted generals, still retaining strong tribal character and the custom of distributing plunder.
- 1374–1376Samarkand · SamarkandAfter establishing Samarkand as his capital, Timur levied infantry, engineers, and baggage personnel from oasis towns, combining them with steppe cavalry. The corps began to distinguish vanguard, main body, and rearguard, and established dedicated administrative posts for grain requisition, horses, and artisan work, as the military organization transitioned from tribal alliance to imperial standing army.
- 1377–1378Khorasan · KhorasanCampaigns against Khorasan and neighboring powers drove the organization of siege-engine detachments and garrison technical personnel. While maintaining their mounted-archery advantage, the corps could organize trebuchets, mining operations, and psychological warfare for sieges, showing the organization could support complex campaigns rather than mere steppe raids.
- 1379–1380Core territories of the Timurid Empire · Timurid EmpireBy 1380 Timur's corps had formed a structure with Samarkand as its hub, combining garrisons in subject territories with rotating expeditionary forces. Princes and generals each commanded military districts, while the center retained elite main forces, laying the organizational groundwork for the larger western campaigns to come.
