Timeline
- 1491–1495Xuanfu · HebeiIn the early 1490s, Mongol Tatar tribes maintained a complex relationship with the Ming, combining tributary trade with border conflict. The Ming court had the generals of Xuanfu and Datong patrol the frontier, striking back at raiding tribes while permitting legitimate trade to keep them pacified. Border defenses were better organized under Hongzhi than in the late Chenghua years, with relatively stable supply of provisions and pay to frontier troops.
- 1496–1500Datong · ShanxiThe Ming maintained beacon towers and garrison farming along the Great Wall; garrisons at Datong, Yansui, and other towns were fully staffed, with firearms and cavalry coordinating against Mongol raids. By the late 1490s, as Mongol internal power reorganized, border conflict waxed and waned, but the Nine Frontiers defense system overall kept functioning, laying groundwork for changes in northern frontier conditions under the Zhengde reign.
