Timeline

  1. 1301–1302Western Sicily · SicilyAfter the Battle of Falconeria, the Angevins could not reconquer the whole island by force. In 1302 Charles of Valois, backed by Pope Boniface VIII, landed in Sicily with an army, but supply difficulties, plague, and islander resistance prevented a decisive outcome; both sides were exhausted and conditions for peace talks matured.
  2. 1302Caltabellotta · SicilyOn August 31, 1302, the two sides reached a peace at Caltabellotta in southwestern Sicily. Frederick III was recognized as King of Trinacria, and Charles II retained the Sicilian crown on the Neapolitan side; the exchange of prisoners, marriage arrangements, and the question of papal recognition were all written into the terms, ending the military phase of the War of the Sicilian Vespers.
  3. 1302–1303Sicily and Naples · ItalyThe peace legally split the island of Sicily and the southern Italian mainland into two crowns: the island ruled by an Aragonese branch, the mainland by the Angevin dynasty. The arrangement for the island to revert to Anjou after Frederick's death was soon shelved, and the coexistence of the Two Sicilies became the basic political framework of the western Mediterranean in the fourteenth century.
