Timeline
- 1471Stockholm · SwedenChristian I personally led Danish forces to besiege Stockholm, intending to restore direct Swedish royal rule, but was defeated at Brunkeberg by the regent Sten Sture. This battle was a key turning point in the dissolution of the Kalmar Union; Denmark could thereafter hardly control the Swedish interior, and the political center of gravity in Northern Europe began shifting toward the Stockholm regency.
- 1472Orkney Islands · ScotlandBecause the dowry pledged when his daughter Margaret married James III in 1468 was never redeemed, Orkney and Shetland were formally annexed by Scotland in 1472. Under the dual pressure of financial distress and the Swedish military defeat, Christian I permanently lost the Norwegian crown's important Atlantic territories, weakening Danish–Norwegian strategic presence in the North Sea.
- 1473–1480Copenhagen · DenmarkAfter the Swedish setback, Christian I turned to consolidating Danish–Norwegian rule at home, advancing the building of Copenhagen, and pursuing inheritance of the duchies of Holstein and Schleswig. In the 1470s he dealt with the Elector of Brandenburg, Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III, and the Hanseatic cities, using marriages and treaties to preserve Danish commercial and political interests in the Baltic, laying the groundwork for the later expansion of the Oldenburg dynasty.
