Timeline

  1. 1141–1143Lombardy · LombardyConrad III demanded the communes of northern Italy recognize imperial suzerainty and pay tribute; cities such as Milan resisted. The king sought through military deterrence and diplomacy to rebuild the Italian control pattern of Lothair III's era.
  2. 1147–1148Southern Italy · Southern ItalyWhile crossing Italy en route to the Crusade, Conrad III came into direct military standoff with Norman king Roger II in southern Italy.
